I’m really sorry Silas Marner didn’t work for you. I think his return to life after the trauma of losing his trusted community is wonderful … Dolly Winthrop gradually thawing him into trust…’we mun trusten’…. The book seems to me to fit so well with the principles you set out here… maybe next time!
I hope you’re right Jane. I’m suspecting the reading of four George Eliots one after another is enough just for now. Best to return fresh and looking forward, in a while!
Hi Ronnie,I often refer to the list of Quaker rules you first mentioned ages ago!🩷
I’m glad you were able to walk off your sad feelings. I’m a bit wobbly on my feet and long walks are a thing of the past for me,but I enjoy reading about your walks and the photos you include.
I read The Hours of the Night last weekend, cdnt put it down,it was brilliant,I was so absorbed in the characters. Have bought it for a friend too,a new copy,my copy is a bit of a tatty pre owned one.
I’ m reading Earth and Heaven this week, very absorbing too,but not quite as good as The Hours IMHO.
Hi Liz, sorry to hear about the wobbly feet. But glad The Hours of the Night was absorbing for you too. Of other Sue Gee, Deborah Vass @stillsketching on here also recommends Trio and Reading in Bed.
Thanks. Will get them next! X wobbly feet..you took a photo of me walking round at Granby Market, probably around 2013/4. Wish I could get those confident feet back!😄
Is the market on this Saturday? Havent been for a year or so,but I think I remember it was always the first Saturday in the month. Might go and then to Squash for a snack! So lucky in Lpool arent we,all the lovely choices we have.
I have always enjoyed your walking posts from your old blog ( they gave me real insight into the city when I first moved here) and this was no different, so thank you. I have passed that cemetary numerous times but never actually walked through it. I think you'll enjoy Ali Smith's Winter - it was my favourite of her four seasonal novels
...a Quaker, solo and of the unbelieving kind...sounds like the space where Nick Cave is at the moment if you read his interviews...
Nor read any recently, but maybe I will. As a solo of the type I never meet any others.

Will give Fritto a visit in the near future!🥳

The Winter Garden’s always open on market days now. Somewhere you could sit and still get a dose of healing Granby!

Yes, it’s on the first Saturday of every month except January.
Thanks Ronnie! Keep warm and wrap up well.
Radio 3 was just perfect on Advent Sunday. Thank you for this lovely piece.
Thank you. The cemetry’s lovely. And you get out of the other side, onto Arundel Avenue, through two beautiful turnstile gates.

Full of quiet joy, a meditation in the streets, thanks for this Ronnie, & knowing these streets so well too I felt the rhythm of the old places.
Thank you Jo,
